The simplest and most common linkage is the four-barlinkage. It is a combination offour links, one being designated as the frame and connected by four pin joints.Because it is encountered so often, further exploration is in order.& H0 o/ A3 y0 R

The mechanism for an automotive rear-window wiper system is shown in Figure1.33a. The kinematic diagram is shown in Figure 1.33b. Notice that this is afour-bar mechanism because it is comprised of four links connected byfour pin joints and one link is unable to move.# a! e8 D4 ]- @) K4 t

The other pivoted link thatis attached to the frame is designated the outputlink or follower. The coupler or connecting arm “couples” the motion of the inputlink to the output link.3 i1 K4 P# N* u9 R; Z
